Quebec - The Most European City In North America

Quebec is by far the most European looking and feeling city in North America. And by Europe here, of course, I mean France. The capital of the eponymous province, it is the heart of Quebecois nationalism. For the recent celebration of territory's 400th anniversary it was French Prince Jean, Duc de Vendôme who was invited by the city officials while Queen Elizabeth II was pointedly snubbed.

Politics aside, the city's historical centre was made a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1985. Winding cobbled streets lined with very French-looking houses and crowded café terraces will make you forget you are in North America. Picturesque ramparts are the only city fortifications left north of the Rio Grande.

Quebec is a true delight to visit. Right from the start it was founded as a permanent settlement and not a trade outpost. The aspiration behind its establishment was asserting la gloire de la France in the New World and as is the case in Spanish America monumental architecture was the order of the day from the very inception. Curiously enough, the most prominent landmark, the Château Frontenac, is a hotel designed by American architect Bruce Price.

Situated on top of the hill overlooking the magnificent St. Lawrence River, Quebec is a typical exampled of Gallic love for scenic locations. As you walk around the city, you realize how well thought through was the layout to provide most beautiful perspectives and sweeping vistas - very much the way Paris' major sightseeing landmarks are lined up.
